Mexicana Airlines will start non-stop service between Calgary and Mexico City starting next summer.

Mexicana officials said Tuesday their service will target Calgary's business and leisure crowd, adding the city to their current Canadian gateways of Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.

"Aware of the economic growth in the west, we have decided to incorporate Calgary as a new destination and are sure it will be a great success," said the airline's vice-president of west coast U.S. and Canada, Jorge Goytortua, in a press release.

The announcement comes after German carrier Lufthansa announced last month it would begin daily flights to Frankfurt next spring.

Calgary's international airport is tied with Montreal as the third-busiest airport in Canada, said Garth Atkinson, president of the Calgary Airport Authority.

"There's always going to be another announcement. Calgary has great air service today.… We're riding Lufthansa next year and now Mexicana. And yes, stay tuned, I'm sure there will be more announcements," he said.

Mexicana will fly an Airbus 319, which has a capacity of 120 seats, from Calgary to Mexico City four times a week beginning in June.
