Angry recreational vehicle owners in Lethbridge are expected to crowd into the city's council chambers Monday for a debate on a new bylaw regulating where the vehicles can be parked within city limits.

City council wants to limit the amount of time RV owners can park a motor home in a driveway or backyard. The bylaw will force owners to move it after 48 hours or face fines and possibly jail.

Ben Van Hees, an 80-year-old Lethbridge resident and owner of a 27-foot motorhome, called the proposed bylaw a step toward eroding his rights as a property owner.

"What I do on my property shouldn't have very much of an effect on others," he said.

But Alderman Tom Wickersham says some residents have complained about RVs.

"It is blocking vision of traffic just on determining the location of where that recreational vehicle is parked. As well it is interfering with neighbours as far as their view is concerned," he said.

Wickersham said he knows this issue is generating a lot of discussion in the community, but the proposed bylaw is not written in stone and depending on Monday's public hearing, it could change or be dropped altogether.
