Olympic mascots Hidy and Howdy are being retired after welcoming people to Calgary for nearly 20 years.

The cowboy hat-wearing bears from Calgary's 1988 Olympic Winter Games are prominent on highway signs at the city limits.

But they will soon be replaced by a more contemporary welcome, modelled along the lines of a monument on the Trans-Canada Highway on the eastern outskirts, said John Hubble, one of the city's general managers.

"We are not intending to replicate that, but we did think that the Calgary 'The Heart of the New West' logo was one that has got some universal appeal across the community, so we were suggesting we take that and move it forward for the logo."

The new temporary signs, showcasing the logo and slogan, will go up by June 1. More permanent welcoming signs are in the works.
