A teacher at a private religious school in Calgary has been charged with sexual exploitation, police said Monday.

Police said Monday the accused had a long-term sexual relationship with a teenage girl at the school where he taught between October 2005 and February 2007.

CBC News is not disclosing the name of the school to protect the identity of the alleged victim.

Sexual exploitation occurs when a minor over 14 has sexual relations with a person in a position of trust, said Det. Lynne Cunningham of the Calgary police sex crimes unit.

"I think the school boards take it very seriously and there are so few incidents of this that I think teachers are checked out pretty good."

Conviction on a charge of sexual exploitation carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail.

Charged is Blaine Stephen Harrison, 39, who was arrested on Thursday.

Harrison has been suspended with pay and is scheduled to appear in provincial court on April 26.
