Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Len Mitzel is pushing for a second 24-hour border crossing between Alberta and Montana.
Currently, the crossing at Coutts is the lone route between the U.S. and Canada in Alberta after hours.
Mitzel wants the hours at Wild Horse crossing, farther east near the Saskatchewan border, extended as well. Currently, the crossing is only open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Mitzel said a second border crossing is justifiable given the increased traffic.
"There are times now, even with our 24-hour port, that the major truck traffic is lined up — especially on the Montana side coming north into Alberta — lined up for a great distance down the highway."
If delayed drivers decide to cross the border at Coutts, Mitzel says it means a five-hour detour.
The Montana state legislature has unanimously supported a bill proposed by Rep. John Musgrove, a Democrat from Havre, Mont., that would see Wildhorse move to become a 24-hour port of entry.
The U.S. bill will now go to the House of Representatives by next week, then, if successful, it will be forwarded to the Montana Senate.
