Calgary city council has voted in favour of a six per cent pay hike for aldermen.

The raise was recommended in an independent report that also suggests aldermen no longer get a third of their pay tax-free.

To make up for the loss of that tax exemption, aldermen will receive about $5,000 more each year. That will make their gross pay $80,344.

The raise was approved Monday and will take effect after the 2007 municipal election.
