Cochrane RCMP are trying to find out who shot a dog tied to a fence on the Morley reserve west of Calgary.

The dog survived after being taken to a veterinarian for surgery last week.

“When you have an animal who is tied being shot with a firearm, it certainly causes a lot of concern — not only for the owners but also the police and anybody in that vicinity as well,” said Cpl. Mel Calahasen.

Officials also found the frozen remains of another dog in the same area that had been shot, Calahasen said.

But it might not be a criminal matter, say police. Calahasen said people have the right to shoot a dog harassing their livestock or causing a problem on their property.
