Shen Yun dance troupe told to find new Alberta venues
Minister of Culture said group didn't follow proper channels to file complaints
A Chinese performance group has been told by the province of Alberta to find different venues for its shows next year.
The announcement comes after Shen Yun complained about the installation of a safety net, technical problems, and poor treatment at Calgary's Jubliee Auditorium during shows last April.
The group then received a letter from Alberta's Minister of Culture Heather Klimchuk, who told the group to find new venues.
Klimchuck said the group complained to the media, not giving the auditorium or the government time to respond to the issues.
"When we have a situation like this it’s really important to resolve this through the channels first," Klimchuck said.
Now, all of Shen Yun’s Alberta dates have been cancelled.
Jenny Yang is with the Falun Dafa Association, which presents the tour.
She said the letter came as a shock.
"It was really surprising for us," Yang said. "They were never treated like this in any other cities around the world."
Yang said the Jubliee Auditoria are the only venues capable of handling the show and doesn't know why Edmonton is also cancelled because of problems in Calgary.
