Emergency responders say the search for a missing kayaker on Upper Kananaskis Lake west of Calgary is likely now a recovery operation.
The search resumed with help from a dive team on Monday for the kayaker who went missing around 7 p.m. on Sunday night.
"It's hard to say whether we will have a viable patient or not today given the temperatures of that water and the overnight environment,” said EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux.
A bystander who heard screams for help jumped in the lake to try to rescue the kayaker, but was unable to locate the victim. Public safety officers then had to rescue the bystander using a helicopter, RCMP said.
Searchers found a kayak and a life-jacket at the scene before calling off the operation for the night around 9:30 p.m. MT as it became too dark.
Alberta Parks has temporarily closed the lake in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park to boat traffic.
