Rokstad Power Corp. fined $325K in 2011 worksite death of Evan Horkoff
Mother of 25-year-old killed at Crownest Pass worksite wants tougher workplace safety rules
An Ontario woman is calling for tougher workplace safety rules three years after her son died in Crowsnest Pass.
Evan Horkoff, 25, was killed when the transmission pole he was harnessed to fell down and crushed him.
Rokstad Power Corporation pleaded guilty to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in a Pincher Creek court on Tuesday for failing to ensure that modifications to equipment that could affect structural stability are performed properly.
The company was fined $325,000. Three other charges were withdrawn.
Horkoff's mother Ann Grant said the penalty should have been more severe.
"Are they enough to deter companies from having unsafe workplaces? I don't think so,” she said.
“I mean a lot more has to be done in terms of maybe putting more inspectors out there to ensure that companies are complying."
The company has until Oct. 7 to pay the fine.
