Calgary Progressive Conservative MLA Ric McIver resigned from cabinet Tuesday sparking speculation he will run for the leadership of the party.

McIver is holding a news conference in Calgary Wednesday morning. A release said he will "discuss his common sense new thinking for our province's future."

A spokesperson for McIver says interim Premier Dave Hancock accepted his resignation as infrastructure minister.

Before becoming an MLA, he served three terms as an alderman in Calgary and unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 2010.
