A special team of RCMP members is in the backcountry near Lake Louise trying to track down a hiker carrying a rifle.

Police say another hiker spotted the man with the gun walking in the Skoki Trail on Fish Creek Road around 5:30 p.m. MT Friday.

Sgt. Jeff Campbell says it is illegal to carry a firearm in the national parks without special permission

“Outside the national parks a lot of people do carry firearms, obviously for protection against wildlife, big game. As far as we know he's just simply breaching the National Parks Act regulations.”

Campbell says RCMP called in members of its Emergency Response Team from Calgary who are experienced in the backcountry

RCMP said the hiker is registered so it’s just a matter of checking camping sites to locate him.
