The head of a Calgary private school says the private system is often misunderstood.
The comments come after Liberal MLA Kent Hehr announced he will introduce a private member's motion Monday, that proposes that the tens of millions of dollars in private school funding be redirected into public schools.
A child in a private school receives 70 per cent of the funding that would be allocated to them in the public sphere, said Erin Corbett, head of River Valley School.
"[The funding] represents a percentage of funding that follows a child. So I receive funding at River Valley School, an inclusive private school in Calgary, per enrolment. It’s not a lump sum, it’s for the child that enters my doors," said Corbett.
"So John Smith’s 70 per cent of his tax dollars earmarked for education follows his daughter Samantha Smith into Grade 1 at River Valley School. I don’t receive any other funding that would be allocated elsewhere."
