The death of a man found unconscious inside a burning house in southwest Calgary on Wednesday is now being treated as a homicide.

Calgary police said Thursday their arson and homicide units are investigating the death of 57-year-old Roderick Basaraba.

At about 10:15 a.m. MT, the fire department was called to a fire in the 1800 block of 15th Street S.W.

Basaraba was found inside a little ways away from the blaze, fire department spokesman Brian McAsey said, and removed from the building.

He had no vital signs when he was taken out of the house, said EMS spokesman Adam Loria. But he was revived on scene and rushed to hospital in critical condition, he said.

Basaraba was declared dead Wednesday afternoon.

Police said their treatment of the case as a homicide was a result of their investigation and the autopsy conducted Thursday.

The cause of death isn't being released and police said no further details are available.
