Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man responsible for an unprovoked, violent assault over the weekend.

At about 2 a.m. MT on Sunday, police say a 25-year-old man was with his friends in the 200 block of 12 Avenue S.W. when he was approached and punched in the face by an unknown man.

The victim and suspect did not know each other and police say there was no prior dispute between them. It's believed the assault did not have a motive and may have been a case of mistaken identity.

The victim was taken to hospital and he sustained serious facial injuries that required surgery.

The suspect left the area with a female.

He is described as between 27 and 30-years-old and stands about five feet, nine inches tall.

He weighs about 200 to 220 pounds with a muscular build and has short, almost balding, reddish brown hair.

He also was a two-to-three-inch reddish brown beard and was wearing a tight white T-shirt.

The woman was about five feet, six inches tall and weighed about 115 pounds.

She has long dark hair and tanned skin, and was wearing a black shirt.

Several others were also present during the assault.
