Police investigating after handgun found in northwest Calgary
Police say a neighbour saw someone rummaging through compost in a back alley before police arrived
Calgary police are investigating after a handgun was found in an alley in the city's northwest.
Police were called to a home on Northmount Drive N.W. near the Calgary Board of Education Saturday morning but the suspect had fled the scene.
Duty Insp. Darryl Hess says a neighbour told officers about someone suspicious rummaging through their compost in the back alley before police arrived.
"Upon further inspection of the area, our member discovered a handgun," says Hess, "and as a result, we mobilized our canine unit and [helicopter]. We did locate somebody who we're calling at this point a person of interest but we haven't been able to necessarily link that individual to the break and enter or the weapon recovery at this point."
Police are still investigating.
