The Rocky View County council has turned down an application to construct a 260-hectare race course northeast of Airdrie.

The proposed Rockyview Motorsports Park would have had multiple uses, including a race course, karting facility and driving training centre.

But councillors heard strong opposition Tuesday night when residents packed the council chamber for a meeting that lasted 10 hours.

Most of the project’s opponents said it was unsuitable for land that’s currently designated for ranching and farming.

In a written statement, county council said the developers can look at other appropriately zoned sites and resubmit an application if they wish.
