A motorcyclist was killed early Friday morning after colliding with a deer just outside the city limits.

The accident happened in the 21800 block of Macleod Trail at about 5 a.m. MT.

The deer was also killed after being hit by the man riding a northbound Honda VT1300, police said.

The 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the man braked for roughly 20 metres before hitting deer, which entered his path from the centre median.

It's not believed speed or alcohol were factors in the accident.

Northbound traffic was diverted to Deerfoot Trail via Dunbow Road while crews investigated.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Calgary Police Service traffic section at 403-567-4000.
