A major fire consumed a house in the far southeast neighbourhood of New Brighton on Tuesday afternoon and badly damaged several others.

Shortly after 1 p.m. MT, fire crews were called out for a house fire on Brightoncrest Heights S.E.

When they arrived, the captain immediately called for a second alarm because of the amount of fire and smoke visible.

Three homes suffered extensive damage but firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to other homes.

A total of 16 nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

While one of the damaged homes did have people in it when the fire broke out, they made it out before fire crews arrived and no injuries have been reported.

Fire investigators remain on the scene.
