Maskwacis teen missing near Rocky Mountain House located
15-year-old had packed his things and left the campsite, say RCMP
Search and rescue crews say they have found a 15-year-old boy after he went missing late Tuesday night near Rocky Mountain House.
RCMP say the teenager was on a canoe trip in the Saunders area, which is located 50 kilometres west of the town, with a group from Hobbema — which is now known as Maskwacis.
Staff Sgt. Bill Laidlaw said the youth had walked away from a group camp around 11:50 p.m. MT.
"The youth went to his tent but when his supervisors checked on him, they discovered he had packed his things and left," said RCMP in a release.
The Calgary police helicopter was called in to help.
"The youth was located safe and sound via helicopter [that] spotted him near the Saunders area," said RCMP.
Laidlaw said police were concerned with factors such as wild animals, dehydration and starvation.
