Man charged in Okotoks stabbing death

A man is now charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 27-year-old woman in Okotoks, Alta., on April 17.

A man is now charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 27-year-old woman in Okotoks, Alta.

Okotoks RCMP were called to a condo complex in the Cimarron area on April 17 where they found a man and a woman — both suffering from serious stab wounds.

The woman — who has been identified as Marites Teresa Reyes Enrique — died a short time later.

Carlos Bisana Peleaz, 28, identified as the woman's boyfriend by roommates, will make his first court appearance next Tuesday.

The couple's shocked roommates said at the time they had just moved in with the woman and her boyfriend the week prior, and they only knew each other on a first-name basis.

They say the woman had just arrived in Canada, and all them were from the Philippines and worked at fast food restaurants locally.

"On behalf of the citizens of Okotoks, and in particular, the Filipino community here, I am pleased that we were able to bring resolution to this investigation in a relatively short time span," said RCMP Staff Sgt. Wade Sparks.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Ms. Enrique, but I hope that they can take some consolation in the fact that charges have now been laid."
