A book checked out of the Calgary public library about 100 years ago has been returned.

Ron Whitby thinks The Raiders, written by S.R. Crockett, was likely borrowed by his grandfather, the first doctor in Wetaskiwin. He would have taken it out from the Calgary Library Company, the predecessor to today's library.

He estimates it would have been checked out sometime between 1904 and 1910.

"I found it in the box of books and I thought it should go back to where it came from and I thought it would be a fun thing for them to do, and for me," Whitby said. He got the book from his uncle 35 years ago.

While the overdue fines would likely be about $3,000, the library is waiving them.

The book will be on display at the W.R. Castell library beginning Tuesday.
