A Calgary man accused of stabbing a mother and her five-year old son to death made a brief court appearance on Monday morning.
Guevara Wilson Clorina, 26, appeared in a Calgary courtroom over closed circuit television. He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the death of his relatives.
Clorina's lawyer, Jim Lutz, said he is waiting on disclosure from the Crown prosecutor's office. Lutz said his client hopes the public will wait for more details to come out before making judgements.
"Understandably, he's concerned about the allegations. The tendency is that you jump to conclusions very quickly. So he's hoping that given a little bit of time, the disclosure will give some answers that he is looking for."
Arrested near Olds
Chona Manzano, 35, and son Gabrial were found with fatal stab wounds in their home earlier this month in the northwest suburb of Evanston. Police arrested Clorina hours later in a car allegedly linked to the victim’s residence near Olds, Alta. — just north of Calgary.
Police say a knife was recovered at the crime scene.
Clorina is believed to be the cousin of Chona's husband. Because the victims and the accused are from the same family, Clorina isn’t getting much support, Lutz said.
"He’s got some people in the community who are supportive of him, so that’s good."
The next court appearance has been set for June 17. Lutz said he and Clorina have not yet discussed whether or not they'll apply for bail.
