The city is asking people living near a popular southwest Calgary park about what improvements are needed.

Calgary's Stanley Park is due to get spruced up and Ward 9 Ald. Gian-Carlo Carra said the city wants to hear from park users first. On Saturday the city hosted a public information session.

"The point of an exercise like this is to really blue sky. To really get a sense of what people love about their park, what they wish they had and what absolutely cannot change because it is super valued," he said.

The park's competitive lawnbowlers have raised enough money to build a second green, which will likely go in this summer. Park neighbour Murray Jackson says he's concerned about congestion in the area.

"There's parking into the community already and the lots are currently full. I think any reduction in that would  put just a huge strain on the nearby community and on the park itself."

The city will be spending the next several months getting feedback from the public.  It expects to wrap up that process in August.
