The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary was badly damaged by last month’s flooding, and while the birds are still right at home it’s not known when visitors can return.

The floodwater heavily damaged the boardwalk, swept away a viewing platform and broke a pedestrian bridge in half. There is also plenty of debris, including a sign from the Stampede grounds.

Calgary parks biologist Chris Manderson said there was so much damage, he felt disoriented when he first returned to the sanctuary after the flood. But once the debris is cleared away, Manderson says the park should recover well.

"Natural systems like this are resilient and they do tend to recover. Vegetation looks pretty beat up right now but there are signs of life coming back, [like] cottonwood seedlings are everywhere."

The Nature Centre is still open, but much of the park is going to remain closed until further notice.
