Police say that icy road conditions were a factor in a fatal crash Sunday morning that temporarily closed 16th Avenue northwest in the city of Calgary.

One woman was killed when her car, heading east along 16th Avenue, crossed the median at Valley Ridge Boulevard N.W. just after 7 a.m. MT.

The car then struck another vehicle heading in the opposite direction, sending another woman and two children to hospital in serious but stable condition.

Officials say both directions of 16th Avenue near Canadian Olympic Park are now open.

Drivers are still being advised to avoid unnecessary travel on the road due to slippery weather conditions.
