People heading into the backcountry over the weekend are being advised to use extreme caution as conditions are ripe for an avalanche in western Alberta and eastern B.C.

The warning from the Canadian Avalanche Centre comes after recent snowfall, which has created very unstable conditions — particularly in Kananaskis Country.

"Those types of avalanches that are running in that area — they're very surprising. We don't have obvious clues to point out the problem, and if they release, they're releasing big," said Ilya Storm, a senior forecaster with the Canadian Avalanche Centre.

There have been three serious avalanches in the Golden, B.C., area in the past two weeks.

One of those killed an Edmonton man who was snowboarding out of bounds.
