"We are looking to get hit by a system that is rolling in off of the coast," she said.
"It has a lot of heavy moist air, so some areas in the Rockies could see 10 to 15 centimetres of snow and Calgary is expecting up to 10 centimetres."
Environment Canada has also issued several warnings for southern Alberta.
A weather warning has been issued for Banff National Park as heavy snow is expected along the Icefields Parkway.
Snowfall warnings have been issued for Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, Sundre, Kananaskis and Canmore.
Wind warnings had been issued for the southwest corner of the province, but have since been dropped.
Several flights have been cancelled so far at the Calgary International Airport. Travellers are advised to check their flight status.
Highway closures and warnings
Hughes said snowfall in the city will also cool things down.
"It will bring our temperature down to -2 C in the afternoon, but the good news is while it is big, it is moving fast which means it will also pass quickly. We climb back up again to 8 C for Tuesday."
RCMP are warning people to stay off Highway 2 between Red Deer and Didsbury because of blowing snow and black ice.
The Trans-Canada Highway was also closed in both directions from Revelstoke to Golden, B.C., and Lake Louise to Field, B.C., because of high avalanche danger Monday morning.
The route is expected to remain closed until crews conduct avalanche control.
Highway 93 from Lake Louise to Jasper has reopened since it was closed Sunday due to poor winter driving conditions, but the road is still snow covered.
A major avalanche closed Highway 16 near Valemount, B.C., on Monday morning and police say it is not yet known if any vehicles were caught in the slide.
