Former homeless couple get their Christmas wedding wish
Thanks to generous donations from Calgarians and the Drop-In Centre, Dolly Sutherland and her longtime partner Mark Witter received their ultimate Christmas wish of getting married.
The couple has been together for 14 years, and both have struggled in recent years and ended up at the Drop-In Centre.
They were asked by staff at the centre what their Christmas wish would be and Sutherland didn't hesitate — marriage.
"He's my whole world ... if I had the chance to give him the whole world, I would," she said.
The Drop-In Centre granted the wish and gave the pair money for a marriage licence, but the generosity didn't end there.
When the couple was paying for their licence at the registration office a woman there offered her own wedding dress to Sutherland — a gift Sutherland said she will never forget.
"I feel like I'm glowing," she laughed.
The couple got married Thursday afternoon at the Scarboro United Church surrounded by close friends.
