Calgary police have charged a former arson investigator with perjury over testimony he gave at an arson trial in January.
Police allege the 48-year-old man misled court about his qualifications when he testified.
"This perjury charge stems from his testimony concerning him being qualified as an expert in court," said Acting Insp. Ryan Ayliffe, adding the testimony did not affect the outcome of the trial.
"Perjury is a little more than just telling a lie in court, you have to prove that there is an intent there to misled the court as well."
Ayliffe could not elaborate on what prompted the Calgary Fire Department to launch an internal investigation shortly after.
The results of that investigation were turned over to Calgary police.
The accused turned himself in and has been released. He is no longer with the Calgary Fire Department.
