A large, late night fire has destroyed a duplex in Calgary's northwest.

The fire broke out at around 10:30 p.m. MT Saturday, in the area of 8th Avenue and 35th Street N.W. As many as seven firefighting units were called to the scene. As they battled this blaze, fire crews told CBC News another nearby building was threatened.

Firefighters say it appears everyone managed to get out safely.

Shortly before midnight, Calgary police closed Seventh Avenue, between 34th and 36th Streets N.W., as a precaution. Traffic in the area had to be re-directed.

Police and fire officials are investigating.
