Fire badly damages exterior of Calgary strip mall
About 40 firefighters worked to keep blaze from entering 2-storey building
Fire caused extensive damage to the exterior of a strip mall in southwest Calgary on Sunday night.
Crews were called to Glenbrook Plaza in the 3700 block of 51st Street S.W. at about 8 p.m. MT to find thick brown smoke and flames venting from columns at the front of the building.
With the fire quickly spreading around the two-storey building, a second alarm was called.
About 40 firefighters battled to keep the flames from spreading inside an awning structure that spans the front of the mall.
Cutting access holes every few metres to douse the blaze, crews were able to contain the fire to the outside of the building, officials said.
There were no injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
