A Calgary woman has been charged with sexual assault against a teenage girl.

The 22-year-old woman is a ringette coach in the city, police said.

One of the 13-year-old girls who played on her team in the last season is the alleged victim.

Police received a complaint last Sunday from the victim's parents about at least two inappropriate incidents that are alleged to have happened earlier this year, said Staff Sgt. Dave Louie of the sex crimes unit.

The woman was charged with five offences, including two counts of sexual assault and one each of sexual interference with someone under the age of 16 and invitation to sexual touching, police said.

The suspect, who has coached ringette for six years, makes her next appearance in court on May 4.

Paul Geddes, who speaks for Ringette Calgary, called the charges devastating.

He added that all coaches are subject to police and background checks.
