Airdrie RCMP says witnesses in the 100 block of Kingsbridge Way heard the explosion at about 10:15 p.m. MT, and then saw two men in their late 20s fleeing a home.

The men were tracked down and taken to Foothills Hospital with severe burns to 70 per cent of their bodies.

Both men are in critical but stable condition.

The explosion reportedly happened in an upstairs bedroom of the home and was intense enough to take out several interior walls.

Officials say there was a flash of intense heat and a small fire, and the structural integrity of the home is now in question.

Residents of an adjacent house have been forced out as a precaution.
