A man is in hospital in serious, life-threatening condition after an early morning incident in Calgary's far northeast.

The man showed up at a farm west of Balzac with wounds resulting from gunshots.

The homeowners called paramedics, who treated the man before transferring him to hospital.

Police suspect he stole a truck at another farm to the south and drove north across a field.

The two farms are owned by the same family. No family members were injured during the incident and they say they do not know the injured man's identity.

Police are searching each building on the two farms for clues to the man's identity and how he was shot.

They say the vehicle theft and shooting may be related to a break and enter at a nearby property.
