Dirt bike crash kills rider in Sylvan Lake
2nd man in critical condition in Edmonton hospital
Drugs and alcohol are believed to have been a factor in a dirt bike crash in Sylvan Lake that has cost one man his life and left another in critical condition.
Police found two heavily damaged dirt bikes and two injured men, both from Sylvan Lake, in an alley behind a local business on Saturday morning.
STARS landed two helicopters near the scene and transported a man, 27, to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton in critical condition.
The second man, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither man was wearing protective gear and neither bike was street legal, police said.
The collision re-constructionist from Red Deer attended the scene to assist with the investigation, police said, and criminal charges of impaired driving causing death are pending.
“Police would like to take this opportunity to again remind the public that alcohol and drugs do not mix with motor vehicles of any kind,” Sylvan Lake RCMP Cpl. James Allemekinders said in a release. “This is a horrible way to start the last long weekend of the summer.”
