Dangerously driven stolen car crashes, man arrested
Police used HAWCS for air support as suspect drove into oncoming traffic after store theft
A man accused of driving a stolen car into oncoming traffic and onto sidewalks before crashing it and trying to get away on foot was arrested late Monday afternoon.
Officers were responding to a theft from a retail store in the 4100 block of 126 Avenue S.E. around 4 p.m. MT when a Honda Accord — later determined to be stolen — was seen in the area being driven dangerously, speeding through school zones and crossing centre medians, police say.
Police cruisers tried to discreetly track the car rather than chase it, while a HAWCS helicopter monitored it from above.
The suspect eventually crashed into a chain-link fence in the 2800 block of Ninth Avenue S.E. near the Franklin LRT station.
He was quickly arrested as he tried to run away, police said. Charges are pending.
