A young Calgary man is facing eight charges after he allegedly pepper sprayed employees at CrossIron Mills shopping mall.

According to RCMP, on April 24 at roughly 3:30 p.m. MT the 18-year-old attempted to steal several pairs of jeans from a store in the mall, worth about $1,665. 

He fled the store, but employees and mall security chased him down. The man allegedly then used a can of concealed pepper spray on the employees and mall security before fleeing towards Highway 2.

Members of the Airdrie RCMP ran after the man, who flagged down a vehicle. It was later pulled over by the RCMP and the man was then arrested without further incident.

An 18-year-old has been charged with one count of theft, three counts of assault with a weapon, one count of resisting arrest, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, one count of possession of a prohibited weapon and one count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

He is currently in police custody awaiting his first court appearance.
