Coventry Hills fire destroys 2 garages, damages several houses
Early morning blaze in northeast Calgary under investigation
An early morning fire destroyed two garages and damaged several houses in the northeast Calgary community of Coventry Hills.
Fire crews were called to the 200 block of Covepark Way N.E. at about 3:30 a.m. MT where they found two garages engulfed by a fire that was threatening to spread.
More resources were called in and nearby homes were evacuated while firefighters brought the blaze under control.
The two garages — and the vehicles inside — were completely destroyed while five houses were damaged, one significantly.
There were no injuries.
Marlene Irving, who lives nearby, says she was awakened by a loud bang, possibly an explosion in one of the burning garages.
The flames spread quickly, she said.
“The one house is in really bad shape,” said Irving, who welcomed her displaced neighbours into her home to keep warm. “They can’t go back into that house.”
