Cochrane RCMP have located a police cruiser that was stolen while officers conducted an impaired driving investigation on the weekend.

The police car was allegedly stolen a short time after officers arrested a drunk driving suspect near the Stoney Casino and put him the back seat on Saturday night.

While officers were dealing with other matters at the scene, they noticed the cruiser being driven away.

A ground and air search failed to locate the stolen car, which RCMP said had no police weapons in it.

A warrant for escaping lawful custody, impaired driving and theft of a motor vehicle was issued for the 25-year-old suspect. He was arrested on Tuesday in Calgary.

RCMP said on Wednesday the police vehicle had been located.

Officials didn’t say how a handcuffed suspect in the backseat was able to steal the car or if it had been damaged.

The cruiser was recovered in a wooded area on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation west of Calgary.
