City ponders nighttime closure of Shaw Millennium Park
24-hour downtown skateboard facility magnet for crime overnight, police say
The city is evaluating whether to close a popular downtown skateboard park overnight.
Shaw Millennium Park at Ninth Avenue and 11th Street S.W. is open 24 hours and attracts thousands of skateboarders and BMX riders in the summer.
But according to police, at nighttime officers are often called to the park for assaults, drug activity and disorderly conduct.
So the city has posted an online survey asking for feedback from Calgarians.
Officials temporarily closed the park at night between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. MT from last September until June.
Making that a permanent policy is one option being considered, said acting Insp. Kyle Grant.
“Well it’s something that we are still exploring along with the city and the parks department and we are trying to compile all of the evidence and all of the statistics to see if it’s viable to keep it open.”
The city bills Shaw Millennium Park, which opened in 2000, as North America’s largest free outdoor skate park.
