Charges laid in fatal school bus crash
Calgary police have charged a school bus driver in an accident on a city freeway last fall that killed a nine-year-old girl.
Louise Rogers, 40, is accused of several Traffic Safety Act offences, including unlawfully operating a motor vehicle on a highway in a careless manner.
Investigators say they believe the school bus drifted into the shoulder of the right-hand lane of Crowchild Trail and struck a parked gravel truck on Oct. 18.
The impact of the collision sheared off the passenger side of the bus and caused the driver to lose control and hit a light pole.
All 11 children on the 30-passenger bus suffered various injuries and were taken to hospital. Kathelynn Occena, 9, died a short time later in hospital.
A week after the fatality, parents, students and staff at View Academy signed a special book to remember the girl with a "gentle spirit."
