The penguins were given herring — frozen into special shapes — to play with before eating the fish as the ice blocks melt.

It's all part of the zoo's Valentine's weekend celebrations, which go on until Sunday.

"We do some fun [activities] themed in a lovey, hearty way," says general curator Colleen Baird.

Tomorrow, in honour of World Hippo Day, the hippos will be getting special watermelon treats.

And on Sunday — the big V day — zookeepers will be handing out roses to the gorillas.

Not sure what gorillas do with roses? You'll have to wait until Sunday to find out, Baird says.
