A Calgary Christmas charity organization that brightens the mood for many local families is celebrating a milestone anniversary.

The Magic of Christmas is celebrating its 30th anniversary today as volunteers deliver gifts to less fortunate families and to patients in care facilities.

It all began with Bob Johnson. His wife was in the hospital with a serious illness. Alone with his two daughters on Christmas Eve, he decided to put on a Santa suit and buy a few small gifts for a troubled family he knew.

"To see that legacy and dream continue is, for our family, amazing," said his daughter Cheryl Johnson. "Because it's what Christmas is all about. It's about giving."

This year, around 450 volunteers will help deliver all the gifts on Christmas Eve to thousands of people.

"Four days ago we knew we didn't have enough toys to make it through today. And today we have enough. It's amazing the city has come through," said Johnson.
