Calgary rescue dog Lexi "performed like a star" for David Letterman, according to her owner.

"The taping went great. Lexi climbed to the top of the ladder while David Letterman held the ladder steady," said Chris Jansen.

He said the crowd seemed nervous because of the height of the ladder, but Lexi jumped right into Jansen's arms after the climb.

"I am honoured and thrilled to be on the show with the legendary David Letterman in the iconic Ed Sullivan Theatre," said Jansen.

The Labrador-border collie cross has already proven to have nerves of steel. She climbs ladders, hops onto bollards and even balances on the rim of a basketball hoop.

“Her mind is just amazing. She never stops learning, she’s willing to try anything and she really hasn’t said no yet, so the sky’s the limit,” said Jansen.

The talk show’s producers invited Lexi to audition after they saw her exploits posted online, Jansen told the Calgary Eyeopener from New York where they are auditioning on Tuesday morning.

“We didn’t believe it at first but once we confirmed everything we were super excited,” he said.

Lexi’s talents go to show that rescue dogs can do anything, said Jansen.

“They’re a dog that needs love. They’re a dog that needs a home. There’s nothing wrong with them at all,” he said.

“With a little bit of hard work and dedication, just like any dog, they’ll be your best friend.”
