Don't be surprised if you see a horse meandering through the mall parking lot this year — the Calgary police’s mounted unit is helping out with security at malls in the city.
Const. Garth Blais has been patrolling on top of his ride Strider.
“We try to every year if we can, most of the years we're on the pathways or in the parks next to the river but during these busy times in the mall we try to talk to people, be a bit of a deterrent, remind them to put their things in the trunk and lock their doors.”
There are four horses and riders in the city's mounted police units.
“We are police officers, and we are going to make an arrest if need be, and there are police officers in cars and bikes nearby, with our radio system between the horse and the cars and the bikes, we're going to catch you.”
