Calgary pediatrician hits pavement to fight child hunger
Dr. Peter Niemen heading to Kelowna to run marathon for World Vision Canada
A Calgary pediatrician is lacing up this weekend to help fight child hunger by running a marathon in Kelowna.
Dr. Peter Nieman will be in Kelowna on Sunday for one in a series of marathons held worldwide to raise money for child hunger efforts.
"Forty kids in one minute died from hunger and I just thought to myself, 'No, this is going to be my cause,'" said Nieman. "For us here in Canada, it's hard to imagine that there are, as we speak in the next 60 seconds, 40 kids will be dead all because of something totally preventable."
According to World Vision, 842 million people around the world don't have enough to eat.
The organization says 1.5 million children die every year due to malnutrition.
