Calgary news, weather and traffic for March 7

Here's what you need to know as you head out for your morning commute in Calgary.

Kicking off the work week with sunshine and a high of 10

(Jason Ronald)

Good morning, Calgary! It's partly cloudy and –1 C at 8 a.m. Here's what's happening in Calgary this morning.

It'll be a nice start to the work week with sunshine in the forecast today and a high of 10 C. The wind will be from the west at 10 km/h.

Overnight, the low drops down to 0 C.

Looking ahead to the long-range forecast, the rest of the week should be sunny and warm as well. Environment Canada is calling for highs of 10 C tomorrow, 9 C on Wednesday and 14 C on Thursday. The normal high for this time of year is 3 C.

In the southeast, there is a collision on westbound Glenmore Trail approaching Blackfoot Trail blocking the two right lanes. The two right lanes are blocked, and traffic on Glenmore is backed up to 18th Street. (updated at 8:30 a.m.)

If you see anything happening on Calgary roads or southern Alberta highways, you can give Calgary Eyeopener traffic reporter Angela Knight a call at #1010, *1010 or 403-521-1010. You can also send a tweet to @CalgaryCommute.

News headlines

Residents in Chinatown met yesterday with developers to discuss plans for a new 27 story residential and commercial tower in the downtown neighbourhood. A plan that was initially approved in 2012 called for a smaller building, but the developer wants to amend height restrictions so that the larger tower can be built. Residents are concerned the building's too big and that it won't blend with other Chinese architecture in the area.. The proposed land use amendments will be voted on by council today.

Calgary city council will receive a notice of motion asking it to study the idea of putting additional CTrain stations along the Red Line between Tuscany and Somerset-Bridlewood. Ward 9 councillor Gian-Carlo Carra is behind the move to study stations that were never built and the opportunities for development around them. Carra suggests that there may be potential opportunities around 50th Avenue in the south and at Northland Village mall in the northwest.
