News headlines

Devon Energy has announced it will lay off 20 per cent of its staff in the first quarter of the year amid record-low oil prices. Some 700 of an estimated 1,000 layoffs will be in Oklahoma City, where the independent oil producer is based. It's not yet clear how many cuts will take place in Alberta, which saw 200 job losses last fall. The company has offices in Calgary and field operations in northern Alberta.

The owner of the Bow building has filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the companies that helped build the iconic structure. H & R Real Estate Investment Trust is suing contractors for $50 million. The lawsuit alleges that the building, which opened in 2012, has a number of problems.  In a statement of claim, it alleges there were problems with the water systems and all of the window blinds had to be replaced as they were affecting the heating/cooling system. H & R says most of the repairs have already been done at the company's own expense and the lawsuit is intended to help it recover those costs.
