"Dad was such a loving but tough guy," he said.

"He would always say, 'You know, in this world you can't always get what you want, but it's a great world anyway.'"

Nenshi says his thoughts are with his dad today, who passed away on Father's Day in 2012.

Kurbanali Hussein Nenshi was born in Tanzania in 1940 and settled with his wife Noorjah in Canada in 1971, and later to Calgary in 1973.

He was a life-long small business operator who died at the age of 72.
